Il sera produit par Ross Robinson (At The Drive-In, Slipknot, The Cure, Sepultura, Glassjaw).

Searching for Zero débarque trois ans après Dead set on livings.

—ENGLISH VERSION–

“Searching for Zero”, your fifth LP, comes out on March 9th. According to you, what would be the major difference between this album and your previous ones?
This album is the product of us working at this band and as musicians for the last 10 years and being accomplished enough players to really push the ideas that we’ve always wanted to with this band. Its heavy yet melodic, there’s technical metal and in other songs stripped down groves. I go from the most intense, impassioned screaming of my life into the closest I’ve ever come to singing. All of these ideas combined with enough time to full realize those ideas and then everything blasted through the creative genius that is Ross Robinson. That sums up our new album.

Liam, did your experience in Axewound (a project gathering Liam from Cancer Bats and singer/guitarist Matt Tuck from Bullet for my Valentine on the album “Vultures”) influence the way you wrote and recorded the new album?
While the new Cancer Bats sounds very different from the Axe Wound record, there were a lot of things I learned in recording that album that we carried over while working on Searching For Zero. With Axe Wound we wrote all the lyrics and everything in such a short period of time, that we had no chance to over think everything and had to go with our instincts. When it came to recording Searching For Zero with Ross we only had 3 weeks to record, so all decisions and changes were done on the fly and everything had to come down to the raw emotion and feeling that was produced. That like the Axe Wound album, was our guide for everything. Matt Tuck and Ross Robinson both share that idea of not over thinking things in the studio.

You left Canada to go to Venice Beach for this album to record with Ross Robinson, who needs no introduction. How was your experience collaborating with one of the greatest metal producers ever?
Going down to Venice to record was one of the best experiences ever! The vibe in Venice is so friendly and laid back and then on top of that Ross is one of the best dudes I have the pleasure of meeting. He’s so stoked on everything and was way too pumped that we just wanted to crush a live sounding record. When we showed up to his studio we already had the album finished and demo’d so Ross was just pushing all of our ideas to the max! Every song he drilled into, getting all of the energy and emotion out of all of us. Once the drums were all tracked, we would finish a song a day and work till 3am each night making sure that song was crushing. We fall asleep exhausted and wake up and do the same thing the next day! We were just on the same page from the minute we showed up right until he dropped us off at the airport. I really hope we get the chance to work together again.

You’ll be touring with While she Sleeps in Europe this spring (including the 20th of April at the “Ptit Bain” in Paris) to defend “Searching for Zero”. What can we expect from this new tour?

This tour is going to be amazing! Oathbreaker and Hundreth are on the tour as well which is going to rip! All the bands have new albums and I think it will just be crushing sets all night long. I’m so excited ! I think the Paris show is going to be nuts ! We’ve never had a bad time in France and I know this show is going to go off! Can’t wait for it !

Your stage reputation is secured, clubs as well as big festival main stages. Where would you say you feel more comfortable?

I think both places have their different appeal. Playing a sweaty club where everyone is packed in and were all spitting on each other and singing in each others faces is awesome. But playing on a huge stage with a giant wall of sound and to be to get thousands of people to party and lose their minds as if you’re in a club is pretty amazing too. I think I just like playing live in general

3 years separated “Dead Set on Livings” and “Searching for Zero”. Should we arm ourselves with patience for the 6th album as well?

Who knows at this point haha I think for years we were caught in the momentum of life on the road and constant touring, where we’d bang out albums and just head back out on tour. Now we’ve got a few reasons to go home and hang out between tours, so I feel that adds some time here and there when working on things. I don’t think it’ll ever be crazy long, but don’t think its ever because we don’t love you guys and want to party, we just sometimes need to see our girlfriends and wives and sleep in our own beds and ride our own motorcycles for a bit.

You played at Download Festival in Donington several times now, but during the 2012 edition something rather unusual happened. After seeing your slot opening the main stage canceled because of the excess of mud on the ground after the arena opened, Billy Talent gave you the opportunity later during the day to take the stage, enough time to play “Hail Destroyer” on their backline. What memories do you keep from that moment?

That day was amazing! The fact that Billy Talent being friends and awesome dudes, just walked up to us and offered us that spot it was the best thing ever. I’ll never forget that day and I’ll always try to be as awesome of a friend as they were to us. Best dudes ever.
